Squirrel Control in West Central Wisconsin
Tree squirrels in the area generally grow between one to slightly over two feet long including their large, bushy tails. Squirrels prefer to live among hardwood or coniferous forests where ground cover is plentiful. Their nests are usually made of twigs and leaves. As the name would suggest, red squirrels are usually are reddish-brown and are the smallest of the three. What they lack in size they make up for in guts. American red squirrels spend almost all of their time gathering pine seeds and defending their designated territory from intruders. Again, like the name would suggest, gray squirrels are generally a dark gray and brownish color. Though slightly bigger than the red squirrel on average, gray squirrels aren’t as territorial as their smaller cousins. They focus on exploration and the establishment of thousands of small caches of food. Last but definitely not least is the fox squirrel. Though the largest tree squirrel native to North America, they are completely non-territorial. Fox squirrels are usually non-playful, solitary creatures that only intermingle during the breeding season.
Problems Caused by Squirrels
-
Squirrels are common sights in backyards and public parks. As opportunistic omnivores, they feed off human food and garbage whenever possible.
-
They can easily enter unsecured attic spaces to nest. Once inside, they can chew on stored items in the attic or even important wires. This creates a dangerous situation for people in your home.
-
Taking advantage of any available food sources, squirrels damage yards, gardens, and fields by digging for nuts and insects.
